About The Estall Family
Our interest in the Estall family started with Mark's mother Margaret Josephine Estall, who descended from a branch of the family that includes many weavers from Bethnal Green. We now have over 1100 people born with the Estall surname in our tree, plus another 10,000 people related to these Estalls. Except for one branch who are related to Charles Patrick (Connor) Estall who emigrated to New Zealand, we believe that ALL of the Estalls (and descendants of Estall women) in our tree descend from William Estall and Leah Holt and we show their connection in our tree. Our tree contains people with the surname Estall, their spouses and the immediate families of spouses (parents, siblings, siblings' spouses). We've also included some maternal ancestral lines that are of particular interest, for example those that trace back to Huguenot origins. We're continuing to add descendants of Estall women but there's still lots of work on that front.

William was born in 1693, the son of farmer William Estall of Lavendon, Buckinghamshire. He came to London in 1708 to serve an apprenticeship with the Cutlers' Company. He then married Leah Holt in 1721 and established a tallow chandler business joined by his son John. This business was next to the old Royal Navy Victualling Yard at Tower Hill just outside the northwest corner of the Tower of London. In the early 1800s, the Victualling Yard was replaced by the Royal Mint that still occupies the site today.

We have only just discovered that the separate tree of our New Zealand branch descends from George Estall who was born in Bozeat, Northamptonshire in 1771. Bozeat is only 5 miles from Lavendon, Buckinghamshire so although we only have a 'best guess' of the relationship between William who married Leah Holt and George whose descendants went to New Zealand, there is no doubt that virtually all Estalls we have found to date are cousins. See the 'Surname Origin' page for our current thinking on the origin of the Estall surname. Although we have traced the London and Buckinghamshire links, we think that the surname itself is likely to have originated in Norfolk.

Thanks very much to all of you who have shared so much information with us. Our study would not be possible without your participation. If anyone has better information on anyone in our tree, please get in touch so that we can keep improving the accuracy of our site. Also, if you would like to share stories or photos that we could put on this website, we'd appreciate hearing from you.
